Very little to discuss here in my project. I'm using RealSpace Model's 1/96 CSM w/boost
protect cover and the Revell kit Launch Escape Tower. However, you can build the Revell
CSM and then update it with the New Ware parts which convert the CSM from Block I to Block
II. I'm using foil instead of paint to detail both the SM and the CSM. The radiators will be
painted white.
If you choose to take this path, the first thing you'll need to do is sand all of the
detail off of the SM including the umbilical fairing. You'll also need to remove the same
umbilical from the CM. After you're finished sanding, you'll also have to remove the three
rings on the SPS engine bell. They don't exist on the real hardware. Make sure you use finer
and finer sandpapers as you go, otherwise every little groove, line and divot will show once
it's painted or covered with foil.
The
photo at right shows the Revell CSM with the New Ware conversion parts added. The umbilical
has been removed from near the side hatch and filled with putty. I have also filled the slots
for the two antenna placements on the CM [they were moved to the SM on the Block II version]
and also the slot for displaying the CSM over a moon landing diorama. Sanding, more
puttying and painting will follow. I also added the optics port and the correct umbilical to
the reverse side of the CSM. These parts came from the New Ware kit. The RCS thrusters also
need to be added.
Below is a side by side comparison of the RealSpace CSM to the Revell kit part with the New
Ware added detail. Since I knew that I wasn't going to use the Revell CSM, the sanding
job isn't the best, however, you can see the physical difference between the two. The
RealSpace BPC is to the right, with the Revell LES attached.

And here's the hatch detail with a couple of Rick's decals attached. It's
slightly out of focus, but I wanted to get as close as possible to show how great the decals
really are.
